I have a Onan 5500 that runs for about and hr then shuts

Customer Question

I have a Onan 5500 that runs for about and hr then shuts down by it self, I can restart it and it works fine for a while. Then it stops producing electricity and continue to run however I can't shut It off with the main switch I have to cut power to the fuel pump. After it uses all the fuel in the carb it shuts down but the switch is solid red and will not allow any operation until in remove the positive cable and put it back on. What's going on?

This is most likely 1 of 2 tings:

1. You have a short in the remote harness.

2. You have a bad controller.

HankI will give the controller a shot, I can't turn the generator off with the button on the generator either, does that till out the remote harness?

Not necessarily.

A short in the remote harness can prevent you from being able to start or stop the genset at the local switch.

But if it won't shut off with the remote disconnected, the controller is definitely bad.
