how to time a briggs and stration 5 hp
JA: I'll do all I can to help. How long have you been dealing with this?
Customer: a week
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: yes
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: i have put knew piston,rings,valves but can not get it to start.
JA: Do you have fuel in the tank? If so, is the shut-off valve open and the fuel clean?
Customer: yes there is fuel and a new spark plug.

timing is really set by flywheel key and the coil gap. Flywheel key only goes in one way, so that is a given. Coil gap you can set using a business card. loosen coil and roll flywheel until magnets are lined up with the coil. place business card between coil and flywheel magnets. Let the coil go to flywheel magnets. tighten the coil down, and gap is set. remove carb and re-install covers, ect.
