You stated that the code you are getting is a code 36.

What exactly is or isn't the genset doing?

A code can not be erased - it can only be over written. Once the genset is running again, the code will still be there.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It will not start and just turns over. Occasionally it will give a splutter as it tries to start.

Ok - that tells me a WHOLE lot more than just telling me you get a code 36.

How long has it been since this unit was last run regularly?

How long has it been since it had a good tune up?

Here is what I need you to do first:

Remove the air filter.

While cranking the engine, start spraying in some carb cleaner (do not use starting fluid).

Can you get the engine to start and run for 10 or 15 seconds with carb cleaner?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It was running perfectly on 12th June 2016.
As it has only done 121 hours I didn't think that it would need a tune up, however it has had a new plug as I thought that may have been part of the problem.
I will the remaining two tasks within the next 48 hours as I will be tied up with medical appointments that may take some time..

Have followed your instructions and it did not start, however, it sounded closer to starting than before. It did backfire through the car by a couple of times.

At this point, there are 2 things that you need to do.

1. Adjust the valves. Both valves need to be set to .002". Make sure you have a new valve cover gasket before attempting this, as the original is glued on at the factory, and is impossible to remove without tearing it.

2. Once you have the valves adjusted, do a compression check on the cylinder. It should be a minimum of about 80 psi, with 120 psi or higher being even better.

Let me know if this takes care of it
