my lawnmower craftsman rider with a new battery wont hold a charge could it be the points have been worn down by the magneto

Customer: i have to charge the battery ever time i use it. when it starts it drains the voltage down nto zero immediately then i have to charge it all night to get the voltage up to 12.6

Model number? Engine make? The charging coil(stator/alternator) is under the flywheel and it's output has to go to the battery positive to charge the battery.
