How do you set the valves on a 25hp.757 John deere

Customer: Engine is back firing, the valves have never been set. It's 2005

Customer: Starts fine, just started back firing

.004 to .006 intake and exhaust. I like to turn till one valve is down and then set the one that s up. Then rotate till the one you just set is down and the other is up. That always works. Manual take spark plug out and turn till you feel compression, feel for the piston, bring piston up to TDC and set both valves at same time. But it works the same.

Pull spark plug wires off one at a time to see if it is just one side backfiring.
