Injection needs to be 18 to 22 degrees before TDC.???
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What does that mean
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Lined the timing mark up on the injection pump to the timing mark on the block
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Is that in a*****
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
This Perkins is in a 1968 mustang skid steer

Diesel engine has to be timed when the injection is BTDC, 18 to 22 degress . If you time it at TDC, the injection is too late and engine will not fire. There has to be a mark before the TDC, mark. Has to be on the compression stroke, # ***** cylinder. Pump should have been installed at the exact place it came off, with out moving the engine, as it is a keyed pump that would only go one way. What do you have now, any smoke when cranking? No smoke would mean there is no fuel to the injection nozzles. Do you have fuel squirting at the high pressure lines if you loosen them?

Yes lots of grayish smoke was told motor was not timed to pump by fuel shop has been turned over several times without timing not being right took pump off made sure that some add gear was lined up with pump at tdc
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Yes fuel is making to the injectors real good

Have the gears been disturbed? If gears have not been changed, how does the pump line up? With a keyed shaft to gear, with nut and washer, or with a timing pin that will only let pump go one place and held by three bolts?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 1 year ago.
timing needs to be 18 BTDC. See manual pages. Set crank at 18 degrees BTDC, and install pump set to the TDC position.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The gears have not been disturbed the gear on the pumpkins up with the cam on the cam in the motor it has the three threaded studs with washers and nuts to hold in place

Why was pump changed? Could engine be out of time by 180 degrees? Compression enough to ignite diesel fuel, 350 PSI?
