Ok I think part 15 of this diagram is what you want to change

It does look loaded with gears etc

My question is : if I pull the left hand casing off are there goig to be gears all over the place ?

15 is what I need to replace .

It does look like it has to come apart. Can you detach the gearbox etc

poor engineering , see the slit about 1-1/4" down ? well that's where it snapped .
