Customer Question

I purchased an Onan 3600 LP Micro quiet generator new in 2008. It has 400 hours and the last couple of years I have been getting some oil in the air filter.

Hello, my name is ***** ***** I am going to assist you with this.

For some reason, a little oil in the air filter is somewhat normal on these KY units. I have seen very few that didn't have some blow by.

But if you are getting excessive oil, the primary causes are:

Oil level too full

Misadjusted valves

Restricted exhaust

Worn cylinder

Always start with the easy stuff - check the oil and make sure it isn't overfull, check/adjust the valves - they should both be set to .002".

While you are checking the valves, also check the breather valve. It is not normally a problem on this new of a genset, but while you have the valve cover off is the time to check it.

If neither of those take care of it, the next step is to do a compression and leak down test to see if you have a worn engine.
