It runs ok up to half throttle. beyond that when I give it more gas it starts sputtering and loses power.
It is not the carburator and the govenor has been checked.

Does the engine start easily?

What have you already done on the machine? Did you have the carburetor apart?

Expert:  JohnF2015 replied 2 years ago.

Have you looked at the flywheel key? It could be that it is sheared slightly causing the ignition to be out or time slightly which could cause poor running situation. Briggs had a problem with some of these engines there is a service bulletin issued in regards ***** ***** issue. Briggs basically changed the flywheel key to a different material and increased the torque spec on the flywheel bolt/nut.

Did the machine just start doing this all at once?

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
New carburetor had no positive effect.
My friend is doing the work and he has also done something with the governor. Not sure what.
Said will try the fly wheel key next.yes I was in the middle of cutting and all of a sudden it started sputtering like out of gas. Had half a tank. That won't be until Thursday evening.

Thursday is the next time David will be able to check things out.

Take a look at the flywheel key and see if it is possibly sheared. It is probably not totally sheared because it will start and run but it could be partially sheared which would cause some running issues. Let me know what you find. I can send you over a copy of the service bulletin if you would like.
