Place freewheel control in “engaged” position, was mowing, then while backing up tractor just stopped, no forward or backward. found rod I think is freewheel but what to do?

Check your transmission drive belt. It has likely slipped off of one of your pulleys, or has broken. Your mower has two belts. One drives your transmission, and the other drives your deck.
