I have a John Deere LX279 lawn tractor with the kawasaki 17hp V-twin. It starts easily but stalls when I let out the choke. If i hold it partially choked, In can keep it running.

Sounds like your carb is partly plugged. Check your fuel filter first. If the carb is getting plugged it will need taken apart and cleaned or replace it. Inside the fuel bowl of the carb there is a jet and they can get plugged or has sediment in the fuel bowl.
