Having trouble with a 2002 yamaha golf cart. I get 48V accross the bat

Customer Question

Having trouble with a 2002 yamaha golf cart. I get 48V accross the batteries just setting, but nothing works. When I connect the charger I get 71 volts accross the 48V batteries and no amperage showing on the charger. When I switch from tow to on I here a solenoid click at leaST ONCE. SOMETImes WILL CLICK ABOUT EVERY 2 SECONDS FOR 3 OR 4 TIMES THEN NOTHING. Also when I switch from tow to go the headlights work sometimes. the radio works sometimes, but as soon as I press on the pedal everything goes dead. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! What does the battery pack voltage read when you press the pedal? Does it drop very low? Look for bad battery or cable connection. Check each battery's voltage!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I don't have a meter on the cart. I have taken each battery out of the circuit and tested for voltage under load. All read 8v.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
volyage across entire bank is 46.3v
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Charger is seeing something it does not like! Or it would show a charge rate.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
What is voltage at the charger connection on cart?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
with 6. 8 volt batteries, voltage is low at 46.3
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Without charge plugged in it reads 46.3. with charger plugged in it reads 70.3 volts
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
But no amps?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
That is currect. no amps
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
I think you have a bad connection or cable in the primary circuit.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
What do you consider the primary circuit?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
You say each battery as 8 volts. X 6 equals 48 volts. ??
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Primary circuit, charger port, to battery pack, back to charger port!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
with everything turned off i read 48.8v across the 6 batteries
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
What is this reading when pedal is pushed?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
I will be back in hour.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it reads about 25v then it jumps back up to over 48v. I will be gone in 30 minites. won't be back until tomorrow. Sorry you couldn't help me.

So batteries are dead! So charger is not working. Do you have friend with same cart you can check charger with?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Batteries are good. Less then 6 months old and all check good, both stand alone and with a load. How do you check a battery charger? When I plug it in I get 48.9 volts out. No i do not have a friend that owns a golf cart.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Did you ever check the voltage at the charger port on the cart? Same as battery pack? If so, and charge does not increase across battery pack by at least 5 volts, the charger has no output. Charger has internal relay that has to close, to power the transformer and capacitor. either can be bad, and give no output, as well as the diodes. If your relay is closing in the charger, and fuse or circuit breaker is good, I suggest you find someone who works on chargers.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
When I plug the charger into the cart I read appx 71.2 volts across the charger port.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
What does the battery pack read?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
71.2
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
You are getting 71 volts across the pack, and it is not charging? ????
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Makes no sense!
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I agree. That's why I talking to you.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Have you opened the charger?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes. Nothing looks burned
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
sometimes it is obvious problem, wire loose or burned component.
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Does it have relay with two terminals? Jump across the terminals.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So what' next?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
You want to try and fix charger ? Try replacing the capacitor.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
First. How do I check charger to see if it is good?
Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
Put it in the cylinder
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Expert:  Curtis B. replied 2 years ago.
