I have a 1982 John Deere 400 garden tractor with 2 cylinder

Customer Question

I have a 1982 John Deere 400 garden tractor with 2 cylinder 20 HP gas engine.
Starts OK first. After a short time starts to miss, then stutters and finally shuts down.
Checked the following:
Both spark plugs spark OK.
Fuel pump delivers gas.
Removed both main and idle screws. Injected carburator cleaner in holes. After a while blew out with compressed air.
Noted one of the 3 wires on rectifier/regulator to be hot. Disconnected this module but engine performance still the same.

Welcome to JUST ANSWER small engines, let me try to help you !! You have spark at the plugs when the engine quits? This is the older flat head twin engine. The engine does have adjusted valves and if the valves have no clearance, as the engine warms up, the valves start leaking, and can cause this. Have the valves ever been checked?

No valve job yet. The engine has just over 1000 hours original. yesterday it was missing some but i still was able to cut my grass (about one acre).

This engine has adjustable valves, accessed through the covers on top of the block. I would try a valve adjustment. Kohler has on line service manuals.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if valve clearance is a problem, yesterday after cutting grass with the engine hot it was still working, how come today when i started the engine was cold i had the problem?

Valves may have nothing to do with it! But all the other items with fuel and spark haven't shown anything either! Just something that needs to be eliminated!
