If the unit was working fine prior to you pulling out the rod then you are likely not getting the rod fully engaged. Make sure you have it pushed back in all of the way. Once you have done that push the pedal in the forward position for about 30 seconds and then do the same thing to the reverse pedal. Try this a few times and see if that helps it.
