My garage door opener is getting "stuck", as it pulls the door

Customer Question

My garage door opener is getting "stuck", as it pulls the door open a few inches, then stops. I have had to "help" it through several sticky spots on the way up every time I opened it yesterday. What is going on, and what can I do to fix it? The garage door opener is 9 years old, 1/2 HP, chain drive. Thanks!

Hi there happy to help.

So literally pushing up on the door as it is coming up helps this issue?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Yes, I can push the door up through the several spots it has been stopping as the garage door opener does most of the heavy lifting. It has gotten "stuck" a few inches above the height of the car - so we could still drive in and out even with it not all the way open - for about a year. Sometimes goes all the way up, sometimes not. But now it is stopping about 4 inches off the ground if I don't get out and push it up.

ok, what is the make and model of the opener?

OK, you need to do 2 things.......

1) on the back of the opener is an UP force and DOWN force adjustment screw. Increase the UP force adjustment.

2) get some garage door lubricant and spray down your rollers and your track. See below......

Most local hardware stores should have this as well.

Hope this helps,

Thank you so much! It is working much better now! I needed to open/close it a few times, but now it is going all the way up on its own. Thanks!
