My sons Poulan 2055 starts and runs with the choke on, but

Customer Question

My sons Poulan 2055 starts and runs with the choke on, but runs way too fast (doesn't idle) If you slowly start to open the choke, the engine starts to smooth out but is running at nearly wide open speed with the throttle closed. The hoses, filter and carburator (had a rebuild kit installed) have been replaced. I'm afraid it's going to over-rev and come apart!
I tried oil on the crankshaft seal but made little or no difference.
Seems like it is getting to much air from somewhere, like when you open the throttle.
When you take the choke off, the throttle does cause the engine to increase in speed.

Make sure the throttle linkage is hooked up correctly and not held in the wide open position.

If you had read my explaination carefully you would have noted that the throttle is closed as the engine is racing but will accelerate when the choke is opened.

Are you sure you do not have the fuel pump diapram installed incorrectly? Was it running fine prior to the carb rebuild?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
According to the exploded view of the carb, the pump diaphram is correctly installed.

The hoses were hard and cracked from being unused for several I doubt it ran before the hoses were changed.

Hello, did you check the carb adapter #7 ? If loose or cracked or torn gasket behind it could cause it to run fast-an air leak

Your suggestion on Oct 6 sounded like a good possibility, however after waiting 10 days for the new gaskets and then going from Florida to home in North Carolina son picked-up the gaskets and installed them. The saw started right up but still had the same problem of running very fast without the throttle being openned. So-o-o, good idea but didn't help!

Ok,this may sound dumb, but is the idle screw on the carb turned in too far?
