The problem may be a bad solenoid. Let me know if you have a voltmeter.

Have someone set one the tractor and turn the key to the start position. You will use the voltmeter and check to see if you have voltage going to the small terminal of the solenoid. Check all of the connections at the battery and the solenoid as well. If you have power at the small terminal then you likely have a bad solenoid.

Seems its the solenoid. My local Advance Auto has one that appears comparable. Is it going to work?

Just make sure the mounting holes are the same and that it has the same number of terminals.
