Murray 22 snow thrower around 1997 - inside gear spins along

Customer Question

Murray 22" snow thrower around 1997 - inside gear spins along with the drive to outer auger. The outer auger does not move. Looks like the gear inside the box up-front is stripped. Thoughts?

Does your particular model have auger shear pins that have - sheared - ?
Look for 2 holes on either side of center that would allow shear pins to go into and couple with the drive shaft inside.

Shear pins are in tact. If you spin the inner auger the drive shaft moves but the outer drive shaft does not. It look like something inside the housings at the outer auger. Thoughts?

if the inner auger spins - and the outer one does not - and the shear pins are in place - the outboard transmission has cracked or stripped gears.
Inside the housing may bea a sheared off pin which holds the shaft to the gearing (you may get lucky)
But you will definately need to disassemble the transfer case to get a better look at your problem.

Here is a parts blowup (with part numbers) of the gear case to compare to what you find inside.

Many times the worm shaft will strip (#321) or the bronze worm gear (#315) will crack and jam up the auger.

More investigation will be required to determine the exact part(s) that failed.
