Goodday. I am experiencing problems with my Coverlock 4. I am using most of the time four threads. I sewed velvet on the machine. The material jammed. I removed the material easily. However. once I started a new project, I am experiencing problems with the A needle. I breaks the thread everty time and will not sew. I retreaded, I changed the thread and needles 4 times now without any luck. I I take out the A needled and sew wiht B - 3 threads, it sews all right. Could the needle plate be slightly damaged resulting in the A needle problem? I live in Mtunzini which is a 120 km from the nearest Pfaff technician.

Only since I started this new project when. As I said, started with rethreading, change cotton and needles without any luck

Only the problem with the A needle. The A needle thread is not sewing. It is loose and not in the stitching and breaks or pull out of needle while sewing all the time from the start of the sew process. Hope you can make out what I am trying to explain

Hi, I am Martyn, welcome to JustAnswer, I am sorry you are having these issues today, I am happy to try and help you get this resolved if I can.

Catching, Shredding or Breaking thread generally means that at SOME point along the trail, there is a burr or rough edge.... ensure...

{C}· New Needle

{C}· Check for Needlestrike/s on Needleplate and Bobbin case and Tip of Hook

{C}· Is the thread of good quality and not old and deteriorated ?

{C}· Can you determine WHERE the shredding/breaking is happening by watching ?

{C}· Thread imbalance is due to Tension.... there is likely some lint trapped in the bobbin or top tension

It may take more than one exchange to get a fix, so please work with me, you are my eyes and ears here.

Thanks a for the advice, but it must be the tension of the top left. I am sending it to a technician. The only problem is that we live in a small town in Kwa Zulu Natal and a trained technician for this model is 800 kilometres away!

You may find there is lint in the tension units...

Try this

Check for rough patches and burrs everywhere the thread passes... use a fine emery board to polish

Looping ..??

It can cause an overload error too

Ensure the Thread is pulled firmly into the Top Tension Unit

If that is OK, this is likely to be lint in the Top Tension

It builds over time and keeps the plates apart

Easy fix tho' ..... simply 'floss' between the top tension discs/plates, where the thread tension is adjusted, as you would your teeth

Use a strip of clean fabric (I use lycra for the stretch, but anything will do)
A small amount of alcohol on the cloth will aid the process immeasurably
It can take several applications to get it done, and in extreme cases, a small probe, like a tiny crochet hook, hat pin, mattress needle or similar, may be needed to clear the worst, then proceed as above
