• Check for Needlestrike/s on Needleplate and Bobbin case
• Tip of Hook
• Is the thread of good quality and not old and deteriorated ?
• Can you determine WHERE the shredding/breaking is happening by watching ?
• Thread imbalance is due to Tension as you suspect.... there is likely some lint trapped in the bobbin or top tension
