There are many instances when it’s important to be able to defend an argumentative position. While writing for an audience that agrees with you is easy and pleasant, it’s often not the most effective kind of writing. Trying to persuade a disagreeing or undecided audience is an important part of many goals. For example, in business you might want to persuade stakeholders toward one way of thinking. In politics, sales, or law, persuasion is everything. Being able to defend a position is an important part of academic and professional writing.

Just focus on the specific issue, and defend your claims rationally and systematically. In 2012, there are many challenges to education and employment that our parents never faced. One of these is the use of social media as a tool for education and business. Social media can be used professionally but can also be used for family relationships, friendships, and just plain fun. Unfortunately, there’s a darker side to social media. There have been a few recent incidents of employers demanding that employees or prospects hand over their passwords so that they can look at private information in social media accounts. Employers and schools should not be allowed to demand passwords from students, employees, or prospective hires.

On the internet, everyone knows that what you say can be used against you. Clearly people have to be accountable for what they write or do online. Certain people (such as Anthony Weiner) have embarrassed themselves by exposing public information that should probably remain private. However, when people deliberately set privacy controls on their accounts so that their comments aren’t visible to the public, they have an expectation of privacy. They do this so that they won’t embarrass themselves, or their employer; to keep a separation between work and their personal lives; and to limit their comments only to a trusted circle of friends and family. Since the information isn’t meant to be public, it should remain private.

In fact, people may be more honest on their facebook accounts or online than they are in job interviews. For example, a site called “wikileaks” regularly posts confidential information. Employees have been known to post or tweet comments that could reflect badly on themselves or on their employers. Viewing account information might be the easiest way to find out what a student or prospective employee is “really” like. However, another good way would be to listen in on private phone calls, read personal email, or open US mail, and employers don’t do that, because it’s unethical.

One problem with the policy of asking for a password XXXXX XXXXX it puts the employee or student in an impossible situation. It’s a serious breach of security to hand over a password XXXXX anyone, for any reason. We all know that people re-use passwords. Giving anyone your facebook password XXXXX XXXXX only a violation of their Terms of Service but also exposes the individual to identity theft, fraud, and other cybercrimes. Password-sharing for any reason could be seen to show lack of judgment, lack of concern for protocol, and lack of attention to the rules set up by the websites one uses. On the other hand, the employer (or prospective employer) makes the rules. Personally, I wouldn’t want to work for someone who demanded this, but if it becomes conventional, none of us may end up with a choice.

As the internet becomes more pervasive and we rely more on social media for our relationships and professional contacts, simply not having an account on social media is not an option. On the other hand, we have to be diligent about how we protect our privacy. People are entitled to a strict separation between their work and personal life if they so choose, and employers and schools should respect that right. Otherwise we may end up in a situation where even where privacy is expected (social media, personal email, even at home), wariness and guardedness will reign. No one wants to live under the threat of constant surveillance or in the fear that expressing opinions or the least bit of personality will hurt their career or educational prospects, but that may be where we are heading. To respect the voices and individuality of employees, employers should refrain from demanding access to private information.
