It's running at a high idle and I'm smelling gasoline. It was fine last night.
JA: How many miles are on the car? What size is the engine?
Customer: It's an ion 2003 4 cylinder
JA: Are you fixing your Ion yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: nothing so far. It's my daughters car
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

The most common cause for this high idle condition is a faulty TPS or idle air control valve located on the side of the throttle body. Both are very common.

Another possible cause would be a faulty engine coolant temp sensor sending an incorrect signal to the PCM causing this rich running condition and possibly the higher than normal idle.

Also, be sure to check for air/vacuum leaks under the hood before replacing any components.
