I have a leak in the area where my grey and black water tank is. I didn’t realize the tanks were full until the bathtub

Customer: I have a leak in the area where my grey and black water tank is. I didn’t realize the tanks were full until the bathtub was backed up
JA: What part of the car is the leak coming from? And are you sure it's water?
Customer: i opened the grey and black tank and a ton of water drained but it continued to leak so I shut off the water inlet. Also I have a travel trailer. Once I shut off the inlet the water slowed down.
JA: What is the make/model/year of your RV?
Customer: It is a 2008 r-vision m-26rks
JA: Are you fixing your RV yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: at the moment my family and I are at a campground. I have only tried draining the tanks and shutting off the water. I am not sure if it is leaking for the tank or inlet, I am worried that we will have to leave the campsite or if I can turn the water on and off as needed and not make it worse.
JA: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: That is it, this is a shot in the dark

  • With the tanks empty. Once the water is turned on. Is it leaking onto the ground?
  • If it does not leak onto the ground if you drain the tanks one by one, which is filling up on its own?
  • Are your freshwater tanks empty?

We are camping with full hookups. There was a solid drip coming from where the tanks are. After I noticed the bathtub full I emptied the tanks but it was still leaking so I shut off the fresh water and emptied it. It started to slow down and now there is not leak or drips. I gave it about 15 minutes and turned on the fresh water and there seems to be no leaks at the moment. I have been monitoring it for about 10 minutes. I think the leak might have stopped. I wonder if I should leave my grey and black tanks closed or open while the fresh water is on.

Thanks for those details.

A of right now, it seems like you overfilled the gray tank, and the leak was coming from the top of the tank where the drain pipes enter it. You can address that another day if needed. The city water should not be filling either the gray or black tank unless you have a toilet or faucet leaking at its valves. I recommend leaving the gray tank open to drain while you camp, then close it on the last day so it can fill up so once you drain the black tank, you can use the gray water to clean the poo from your drain hose. If you are still worried the camper is using city water when you are not using any. You can place your ear to the hydrant to see if you hear a slight hum or whine noise that indicates water is flowing. You can also kink the hose and hold it. If the hose after the kink gets squeezable then your camper is leaking somewhere inside.
