Try checking the dip switches on the new unit. They may not be set correctly. The thermostat only goes by what that A/C tells it to do and needs. Randall

It would help if I had the model number of this A/C and the style of the thermostat. If this is a digital model I need to know which one as they have more than one. It would probably be a 5 button Comfort Control or a newer Comfort Control II version.
