Customer Question
We have a Springdale...

We have a Springdale 202 with a 60 watt solar panel. When the batteries are fully charged they will hold at 12.2 v or better until we turn on a light or some other load. Then they will be drained in1 1/2 hrs. The 2 batteries are Interstate group 24s that are only 2 years old and have 120 camping days on them. Are they gone or do I have another problem?

Mechanic's Assistant: Just to clarify, what are the exact lights you're talking about?

Two overhead lights with two 921 bulbs in each one. approx. 72 watts total.

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '60 RV?

Springdale 202 20' with two Group 24 batteries and one 60 watt solar panel.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your RV yourself? What have you tried so far?

I removed the batteries and charged them up on the bench to isolate them from the camper. I charged them up and let them set for 48 hrs. charge went from 13.5 down to 12.7 v. I reinstalled them in the camper. turned on lights and waited 2 hrs. the voltage was down to 9.5v. I recharged them and let them set for 24 hrs with no load and the voltage stayed above 12.5. (no sun) I unhooked the solar panel and let them set for 24 hrs and the voltage went down to 12.2. All systems worked fine on 4th of july camping trip. This started last week on a 4 day trip.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I think that is it.

How large is the solar controller in watts? Fully charged 12 VDC batteries should read 12.8 VDC. You won't get that on a trickle charge. They may need a good deep charge at 40 amps for a few hours. Have the batteries load tested to be sure they are viable. Over 3 years and they start to fail. Although even fairly new batteries fail more than most people would realize. Once you rule out the batteries we can move ahead on the rest to get to any further causes here. All follow ups are included in our fee.

Solar controller is 10 amp. We also charge via land line and Yamaha 2000 generator. They were both charged for 24 hrs on a car charger before I started the rule out tests. They both charged to 13.3 or better VDC. One dropped to 12.75 after 48 hrs., the other dropped to 12.57 after 33 hrs. with no load.
I am having Oreilly auto parts testing the batteries as we speak. I will update after I get their test results.
Thanks

With nothing on they should maintain their charge. The LP detector will draw them down some.

O'Reilly's said that one battery was good and one was bad. Is this then my problem or could there be additional issues?
RV Mechanic: Randall, RVIA Certification replied 11 months ago

The bad one would tend to suck down the good one. I would get them back in again and see if this is resolved. Check the charging voltage and see if this is about 13.7 VDC at the batteries. If so, then the converter is at least doing the job. If they continue to drop, you can do some testing for a parasitic drain. You should be seeing some decent DC voltage out of the controller when the sun is out.

Did changing out the battery resolve this for you or do we need to continue to seek a solution?
