My name is ***** ***** I am going to assist you with this.
What is the serial number of the genset?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Generac np-660 gn-480 model 09734-1 serial(###) ###-####

Wow, that's an old one.
This is going to be a bit of a challenge, as all the testing will need to be done while the genset is NOT producing power. If it is producing power, it is working.
The first thing I need you to do is to is to remove the cover from the control panel
Connect an AC voltmeter to the circuit breaker, on the input side.
Start the genset and note the voltage. How much voltage do you get?
Let it run until it quits producing power, and note the voltage at that point. How much voltage does it read now?
Inside the control box area, there is an aluminum cased device with 6 tabs on it. There is a small red LED on that device. When the genset quits producing power, does the LED go out, or does it stay on?

does not put out any power no red light on
Expert:  Hank F. replied 2 years ago.
You actually got a reading of 0 volts? That is extremely uncommon.
Even if it was reading 3 volts, I need to know.
But from what is happening to your unit, I would suspect 1 of 2 components here - either the votage regulator itself, or the excitation breaker.
The device with the LED on it is the voltage regulator.
Setr your meter to VDC, and connect the black lead to wire 0 at the VR, and the red lead to wires 4 at the VR.
Start the genset, and monitor the voltage all the way until the genset quits produicng power.
What voltage readings do you get?

Had family crisis just now back to generator can not find number wires not getting any power at breakers
Expert:  Hank F. replied 2 years ago.
All of the wires are numbered. Sometimes they are just a bit hard to read.
Also, were you testing the input side of the breakers, or the output side?
