Econoline e3500 coachman motor home: I am trying to help a

Customer Question

I am trying to help a friend get their 1984 ford motor home running. It is built on the Econoline chassis E3500. Has a 460 in it. It sat for two yrs. At first I was able to get it to crank but no start or even a pop. I diagnosed that it had no spark from coil nor any fuel. I found the control module connections were corroded and wire coverings to be crumbling so replaced control module and coil since it was cheap any ways. Replaced plugs wires cap and rotor. Now it got spark to the plugs but no fuel. Found fuel relay corroded so replaced them still no fuel. Found that someone bypassed them any way. Found loose wire underneath the chassis coming from fuel tank applied power and now get fuel to carb. Now this part baffles me. I now can get it to run as long as I hold the ignition switch in the start position, and I mean starter engaged. But as soon as I release key to run position it dies. So I thought that it was ignition switch was bad so relace that and still same thing. Now what.

Hi I'm Wayne
I will help you with this
You are a good wrench, tracing and repairing all them problems,
what you need to check next is the power at the
(+) of coil, if it looses power when key to on position
then that wire is broken some place in the harness
run a temp jumper wire from power source to (+) on the coil
it should stay running

Hi I just found this wire diagram for a 1984
E 350 460 engine
look at the right side there is a relay that goes to ign switch
3 terminals , this may be the problem

Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
Can you find that relay
should click in and hold in when key to on position
I can only call you if JA allows , but they charge a extra $56.00
on top of question value
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
okay so i will go back to vehicle and check these things and let you know later this afternoon.
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
OK That is fine,
Grand kids just come over
so I will be on-and off
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
the relay energizes and holds when the ignition switch is in the run possition it is also where the second batt hooks up to. it clicks if the second batt is hooked up or not
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
HI
Sorry for delay, like I mentioned Grand kids over 6 out of 8
I suggest to replace it,
I think this is problem
Wayne
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
okay i will replace it today and let you know.
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
OK,
Thank you
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Replaced it and no help next ideal.
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
I was sitting back and thinking about this
You replaced all things that would cause it
plus the items I suggested
look around and see if it has a low oil pressure switch
it would be near the oil filters
Being a 1984, I doubt it , but worth a check
Wayne
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
it does and is located at the oil presure switch i grounded it and still nothing.
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
Hi
It works the opposite
ground kills the engine
it is a NC, when see oil pressure it opens
Wayne
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
so i just want to unplug it. If i hold the ignition in start possition it starts and oil gauge shows preasure. As soon as i let go it dies.
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
Hi ***** is not it either
I still don't understand why it does not run
when you put battery voltage to + on coil
does it have fuel shut off solenoid on carb,
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
no
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
OK Thank you for that
I have to cook diner now for family.
I will be back on soon and think this over
Wayne
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
ok
Expert:  Wayne replied 2 years ago.
Ok
I am back
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I think i am going to remove all the ignition system components, check all connections and wires and re install. I will just bypass or disable any of the extra components other than the necessary ones. What do you think.
