VerifiedHi: Thanks for coming to Just Answer with your question. My name is XXXXX XXXXX perhaps I can assist you with this. The Magnetek unit is going to charge and convert as the same time. You can't separate those functions unless you bypass the batteries and that isn't a good idea as the batteries act as a shunt in the system to give more amperage when needed and absorb any AC ripple that may exist. What are you trying to accomplish with the Xantrex unit? It may be easier to change to a different converter or put a Progressive Dynamics upgrade in so that you get enhanced charging like the Xantrex unit gives.. You can accomplish the same thing with a Progressive Dynamics upgrade to your Magnetek unit. This isn't hard to do. It will do the multistage charging that you want so that you reduce the boiling you get now. The part number is XXXXX and retails for about $300 or so. It goes into the bottom section of your Magnetek box and takes about an hour to change out. It comes with instructions. I would go that route and perhaps you can take the other unit back or exchange it. Sometimes when you get advice from multiple sources it is like asking people if Ford or Chevy is best. Everyone has an opinion. Progressive Dynamics makes a good product as does Xantrex, but the good thing is that the Progressive unit goes right into what you have already. The other alternative is to take the guts out of your Magnetek unit and feed the fuse panel from the Xantrex unit. Still doable but perhaps more work. Let me know if you need more help with this.
