Nightmares happen for a variety of reasons. Occurring during REM sleep, they are often a way for the brain to express trauma. For example, if you are in a car accident, you may experience reoccurring nightmares for a period of time afterwards as your emotions and brain attempt to deal with what happened.
While reoccurring nightmares can also be due to anxiety, medications you are taking or an increase in stress, the most common cause is PTSD caused by trauma.
Treating nightmares can be done through therapy and self help. But first it is advisable to speak to your primary care doctor, just to rule out a possible physical cause, such as medication. If you are cleared, then talking to a mental health therapist is the best way to find out the root cause of your nightmares and to treat the symptom(s). Facing the root cause of your nightmares is best done with a trained professional who can help you recover.
You can also try self help. For example, writing out your dreams in a journal can give you perspective. Talking to trusted friends and family about how you feel. Here are some resources to help you:
