I have a relationship/psychology question. I've been dating
I've been dating my boyfriend for half a year now. I'm very smitten and haven't felt this connected with an SO since first love when I was still a teenager. We instantly clicked and were monogamous by our second date. Early on I realized I could spend the rest of my life with him and I would be happy. In many aspects, this is the most satisfied I've ever felt with a partner.I was raised by a parent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and a lot of my insecurities are directly linked to my upbringing. My parent was very abusive about my appearance and I have a lot of body image issues as a result. My bf is the opposite in that he is always complimenting me physically. In the beginning, it felt like a solution to my trauma. Other SOs weren't rude or negative about my appearance, but more neutral. With him, it almost feels like my appearance has an equal importance as it did to my parent, just handled differently. I so badly want it to be the case that I've just found someone who can build me up the ways I was always brought down.I'm slow to open up and share the full extent of my trauma with romantic partners. He's very comfortable, so very early on I learned everything. I've realized over time I know way more about him than he does about me. And when I have tried to open up, he always brings it back to what he's gone through. We've discussed this and I voiced my need for him just to listen. He was receptive, but I haven't tried to open up again after. My biggest thing that makes me concerned I may have mirrored my parent-child dynamic is how frequently he brags about his work to me. He's relatively new in a field that's very competitive but is finding success. I'm very proud of him and how hard he works. But when we're alone, the only thing he wants to talk about is how well he's doing and how talented he is. In the beginning, I was excited and interested. Now, it's becoming a concern for me. It's starting to feel less like a partnership, with my partner excited and proud to share his accomplishments with me, and more like listening to all ego.I want to know: is there such thing as too much bragging in a relationship? Am I looking past red flags because I have found a softer version of the "comfortable" dynamic I was raised in? Is there something I need to reflect on in myself to understand why I feel like I'm reaching a limit hearing the same self-praise every time I talk to my bf?I don't want to break up. I really want this to work. I don't know how to address something like this with him because obviously I want him to grow and accomplish his goals, follow his dreams, etc. Is it narcissism or is he just a product of our culture/generation?At what point does healthy self worth/pride reach narcissistic territory? As a partner, am I wrong to begin to grow tired of it? … read more
