I have been with my boyfriend for a year; whom I love dearly and is good to me. However, his frustrations and impatiences with small things have escalated to explosive anger to throwing things and yelling so loud neighbors three doors down can hear. This all really got worse when his oldest daughter moved out and went to live at her mom’s. I was previously in a physically abusive marriage. (He knows this) and now his anger is so bad I am scared. It took me 8 years to get away from the abuse and 2 years of therapy to get through my psychological issues from the abuse. The smallest things make him explode…. For example here is what happened last night: He has been really sick with stomach pains and chest pains for the last two days. He even missed work which he normally won’t. I have had to work 3 12s out of town so I couldn’t be there with him. But I have been worried sick. Monday he stayed in touch with me and his youngest daughter was home after school so I wasn't as worried as yesterday. he was worse and it took me several hours in the morning to get a hold of him. Finally he answered and said he had been asleep, but was feeling a little better and was going to take some more meds and sleep till 12 then get up and work. So I told him I would check in after 12. Well because of work I couldn’t call till a little after 1. Then I found out he was a lot worse and was considering going to the hospital. I am a worry wart as it is but this really had me uneasy and I didn’t know what to do cause I was stuck at work. He said he had to go to the bathroom and would call me back. Well I got a text at 2 that he was going to take some more meds and one very strong sleeping med and would call me when he got up. I couldn’t call but I texted him that wasn’t a good idea. He asked why and I was trying to text back but because of work it was 20 minutes before I could get to my phone so then I decided to call instead. Well the first time he didn’t answer and so I called again. He answered in a stated of anger. He told me I don’t care about him at all because I wouldn’t let him sleep. He cussed and yelled at me. I was just wanting to know all the meds he had taken to look at interactions. (having nursing experience I was worried he was accidentally overdosing) and I also wanted to make a plan to either have his mom come down and stay at the house to check in on him or to set an alarm to call me in 3 hours. I was really scared with his heart problems and me not being there. Well I left him alone for 6 hours then I called once he didn’t answer so I called his mom. She and I thought I should drive home even if he is mad I could be there if he woke up worse or needed something. I was not going to wake him up I just wanted to check on him and get my meds out of my night stand and accidentally woke him up. He was so so mad I came home. Told me I was stupid and irresponsible that now he has to worry about me driving in the morning with little sleep and that I didn’t care about anyone but myself. Cussed & yelled at me again for waking him up yet again & just on and on. I told him I was only trying to help earlier & just now was an accident that he had been in bed all day it didn’t make sense to be this mad. But halfway through the sentence he stood up threw his pillow & screamed at me. I was really scared & decided I needed to leave. As I am leaving he comes from behind me screaming & I jump & cover my face as a reflex, this made him even madder. At this point he continues to yell at me but I am in panic freeze mode & honestly couldn’t hear him even though he was screaming. Finally he slams the door & I go to leave then he opens the door & yells something but all I understood was come get all of your stuff if you are leaving take it all. I looked at him & he said come get all your shit. I walked back in & then I calmly said “I love you & I truly did everything I did because I was worried sick! I honestly had nothing, but good intentions. And even if you are mad because I woke you up I don’t deserve to be yelled at like that. You scared me bad. I spoke to your mom & she also thought I was doing the right thing & if she was the one that woke you up, you would never yell & treat her like this would u? so why do I deserve it?” He didn’t respond & I looked at the clock I had to be up in 4 hours for work there was no way I could drive. So I stayed. This morning I wanted to say bye but I was scared to wake him up. I decided to kiss his forehead but It woke him up, I said I am sorry I just wanted to hug & kiss you bye. I was standing in front of the AC and was shivering & he was coming out from under the covers to hug me but about that time I had a cold shiver & he thought I was flinching because I was scared he was going to hit me. He got mad & rolled away. I said I love you & he didn't respond so I left. I feel like a failure & don't know what to do, is it me? If not how do I help him & feel safe at the same time?
