I can understand you wanting to build a relationship with this woman and not let her past interfere in some way, but unfortunately that is not realistic as her past will creep up from time to time in your relationship with her, but that does not mean her past as to have an overwhelming presence in your relationship. Right now you both have to try to move forward one step at a time because things are very complicated so the relationship is going to have to move slowly. The first thing you have to focus on is trying to get her some independence and that means moving away from her ex-husband's basement...I am not sure of her financial status or employment, but trying to get her to some kind of home that has roommates, maybe some financial assistance from a charity/religious organization can help too. As long as she is living in that basement, she is going to have a difficult time moving forward. In addition, you could think about finding support groups for women in similar positions as her so that she can find strength in solidarity and build her self-confidence to help her to move forward as well. Overall you are going to try to get her to separate from many things in her past right now on a physical level and at the same time build new memories with her, such as going out on dates, so that you both can move forward in this relationship together.
