How much space is too much space during a break up?

I'll try to be brief...about 8 months ago, my now recently ex boyfriend was in a horrible car accident, causing him to pretty much lose use of his right hand, which was his dominant hand. The only reason why he didn't die that night was because I woke up from a nightmare @ 4:45 am and decided to call-something was unsettling. Anyway, when he didn't answer and that feeling intensified, I went looking for him and sure enough, found his car flipped and he laying on the ground bleeding to death. Anyway, now that you have some background of what the last 8 months have been like, he just now has gotten the clearance to use his arm again, for what use he has. When he broke up with me on mothers day, it was after I flipped out on us being late to go see my mom after we spent so much time with his mom, now seeing that I should have just talked to him instead of storming out, it was needless to say the straw that broke the camels back. He says we aren't right for each other, now right now at least. That he wants to be friends when the time is right, and see what happens next. He still loves me and misses me, and has hopes for us getting back to together he says, "otherwise we would be having this conversation" which was the last time I talked to him when I apologize for Mother's Day. I guess my question is, how should I approach him during these few weeks or months? The break up just happened, all my stuff is still at his house, I want nothing more than to have him back but know not to push for it, that this breakup is to help both of us grow. I hear some people say "no contact" and others "only reply to his contact" To me I feel he is a special case, and this is also the part that I'm more torn on. I was the only one there beside him, besides family, every step of the way and I don't want him to feel I abandoned him if I go the silent treatment. I don't want that honestly, but somehow I feel that may bring him around sooner. I just want him happy, which he says is another reason why he wanted to break up; this new found chance at life makes him want to do things right and not take advantage of everything. Really I just need some advice.
