I have been in a long distance relationship for 2 years with a man I dated in high school. He asked me to move with him, but I didn’t. My parents were not allowing it and I was scared. We would see each other from time to time through the years and I’ve always had feelings for him. I’m not sure if it went both ways. He always flirted with me when we’d run into each other. He says he doesn’t remember asking me to move?! We were young and I can say I wasn’t “in love”, just really, really liked him. When we got back together, he had gotten out of a long-term relationship (13 yrs). Was probably living alone for five months. They had split up a year earlier, but she was living there until she got her own place. Our relationship has been great. We get along so well. Some ups and downs with it being hard that we're apart, but we always worked through it. We’d see each other about 15/20 times a year. With a few week long vacations in there. From the beginning we both knew he would never move back, that I’d have to move to where he is. And I have always been good with that. He would never marry the girl he was with for 13 yrs and told her that, told everyone that. He's always made comments that he will never get married. This was from the day I met him 16 yrs ago. I'm not sure what has happened in his past, but something obviously has the way he looks at marriage. Anyways, I'm good with that. I've never wanted to get married either. Neither of us have children nor want children. The only problem I had is when he would get distant with me about every 6 months or so and make excuses as to why. I would be visiting and the day would come that I’d have to leave and he’d get weird and distant. Or something would be said about him looking at houses and he’d get distant. I would never mention me moving cause I didn’t want him to run away. He wanted to break up about 15 months into the relationship, but never came out and said it. He kept saying take a break, need a break, etc. He made up alot of excuses as to why. What if I moved and didn't like it? Would I be able to drive around the big city? What if I got there and didn't like him anymore? What would I do if it didn’t work out? etc, etc. To me, those were totally excuses. He said he wanted to be with me, but wasn’t ready to move me in. If the circumstances were different, this would never be happening. I even suggested that I get my own place, then his excuses were it would be too expensive and I’d be at his house all the time anyways. There would be no use. We did take a break, which I had thought we broke up, and he totally couldn't take it. He’d call me all the time and I’d be ok with it, then it would get too hard with the feelings, then I’d miss him and he’d call me again and I’d answer the phone, then I finally told him to leave me alone. I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride with my emotions. I was heartbroken. Devastated. He said he understood and would quit calling. Then he’d call a week later. After that, he wanted to come see me. And we got back together. He actually said that he’d have to buy a bigger house for me and my dogs when we were talking before he came up to see me. Then backtracked once we got back together. Now he wants to end it again and says he truly loves me and wants to be with me, but it’s been two years and he’s not any closer to moving me in. He is not ready to move anyone in right now and he’s not sure when or if he ever will be. He likes his space and the more he lives alone the more he can see himself doing it maybe forever. He says it's not fair to either of us to keep going on like this. Which I agree. If it’s not going anywhere, then there’s no use. But if you truly love someone, why would you not want to be with them? If he wanted it to work, why wouldn’t you make it work? Find a way?! He said he feels like he jumped from the ex to me. Not that I’m a rebound, but he just didn’t have time alone. He also said he feels like he put his life on hold for the last few years. He has family here. He kept saying he hopes he doesn't realize he screwed up and he may come to realize he messed up, etc, etc. And that one-day there may be a future for us, but he has to be ready to move me in - not that he's trying to lead me on. He likes his space and wants to be able to do what he wants when he wants, not that I'd stop him from that. All his words. I was like, tell me if you start dating someone down there, she wouldn’t be there every night or you’d be at her house? He’s like no, it would be less likely cause I could swing by and say hi when I wanted. I was like you’ll have someone moved in within two months and he’s like I don’t think so. I said why and he said because as much as he loves me and has strong feelings for me and he can’t move me in, he won’t be moving anyone else in. I guess I'm just confused. I’m pretty sure he has commitment issues even tho he says he doesn’t. But so bad you can’t get over your fears? He had his freedom before and had to come back. Is it excuses? Does he just want to be single and date other girls? See what’s out there? Is he just not that into me?! I want to believe he truly loves me and was being genuine, but again how can you love someone and just walk away? I guess time will tell. Your thoughts?
