Lawyer friend, I am in Minnesota. No steps. I just need some
No steps. I just need some advice: I've been renting from my owners for 2 years. My landlords/owners moved to Chicago. We have been taking care of their house like it is our own. In the first year, we were receiving notifications on our door regarding the owner's not paying their mortgage. The owners clarified with us that because there was no Wells Fargo in Chicago, IL, they switched to Chase bank with their mortgage. We didn't think anything of it since.About a month ago, I started wondering what my owner's are up to. We've had people come to our house looking for them. We hear from our neighbors that they were suing neighbors in the past (who now have moved) and that many households want to sue them. It wasn't until 2 polic officers came to our door asking for one of the owners, that I started digging in to how sketchy they are.We have never received a Certificate of Rent Paid from them, even though I've asked, so I called the MN State or Revenue asking for options. They send me a rental affidavaid which is a document I can provide so that I can still get my property tax refund for the years I lived there. I checked with the City of Eagan (my city) and they confrimed that there is no renters license on the property we are renting.I keep getting mail for them, some for the owner, some for the company (whose address is our house/their house). I don't want to be in the middle of anything if they are in trouble. These letters are from the state, county, etc. Would it be illegal for me to open some of these letters? To protect myself and know more about the property I'm living in and about the criminal owners we are renting from?Need a lot of advice. Not sure what to do. … read more
