Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
Choose Print & Fax (or Print & Scan) or Printers & Scanners.
Hold down the Control key as you click on the list (or free space) at the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears.
Then, click the + (plus sign that you see on the Printers & Scanners window, and not on the keyboard) sign to add printer. Select your printer from the list.
Note: Make sure that you are resetting the printing system before adding the printer.
Try scanning anything.
Most of the printers do not provide scanning apps that are compatible with the latest Mac OS X. Instead, they provide ICA (ImageCapture) driver and insists on scanning with the ImageCapture app. The old scanning app that you have already installed with your computer may not work too. So, I suggest you use the ImageCapture application, and it is easy to use.
