XP440 having issues with MacOS Hight Sierra version 10.13.3 can u help?

Printer won't come online unless I delete printer, reboot, then add printer. I updated my MacOS yesterday.

Please follow the instructions given below.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  2. Choose Print & Fax (or Print & Scan) or Printers & Scanners.
  3. Hold down the Control key as you click in the list at the left, then choose “Reset printing system” from the menu that appears.
  4. Then, click the + (plus sign that you see on the Printers & Scanners window, and not on the keyboard) sign to add printer. Select your printer from the list.
    Note : Make sure that you are resetting the printing system before adding the printer.

have done the above three times, each time the message say "waiting for scanner". How long must I wait? Will I be charged again for this service?

I spent $34 to get this far. If I now spend $39.00, that would be $73.00 and I would still have the same printer.
I may have to junk this one and buy a different brand. thank you
