I'm getting the message...

I'm getting the message: 'Lens error, restart camera' but restarting repeats the command. Plus whirring noise occurring when on seems to indicate a mechanical problem. Can anything be done by me?

It's a Canon DIGITAL IXUS 970 IS

Technician's Assistant: What have you tried so far with your Canon?

Turned it on and off as instructed several times and also recharged battery to see if that made a difference.

Technician's Assistant: Anything else you want the Camera Expert to know before I connect you?

I"ve had it for several years and it's been in constant use as needed for my art practice.

I think it probable that gear teeth have bent or broken off and therefore would need some hands-on attention.

Unfortunately, you are correct.

If it is less than a year old, then it can be repaired/replaced under warranty.
