has this happened because Canon does not have an updated driver to suit High Sierra

First, use your Apple icon to go to System Preferences > Printer & Scanners. Place your cursor anywhere in the printer pane and, while pressing and holding the CTRL key, press the select key on your mouse to REset Printing System. Then restart your Mac computer and return to this conversation by selecting the link in your notification email.

Drivers for your printer and operating system are available at the official Canon USA support website. Please use this link to download and install them:
