JA: What's the make/model number of your printer? How old is it?
Customer: using mac osx 10.7.5
JA: What kind of computer are you printing from (Mac or PC)? What Operating System (OS) are you running?
Customer: lexmark pro205
JA: How long has this been an issue? What happened right before this popped up?
Customer: I tried scanning something. I recently obtained this mac. Trying scan for 1st time. print function works. fax works.
JA: Anything else you want the printer expert to know before I connect you?
Customer: usb connection didn't seem to help. Using wireless.

I found one site that talked about using the printer to download some kind of 3-digit acronym software, but I don't see a way to do that. The driver used for the printer should be able to do the scanning.

Losing the scanner connection is a common problem with wireless connections. Wejust need to reinstall the printer drivers. But it must be don correctly. I can give you detailed directions to follow.

Reset Printing System - If there are no other printers installed on the mac, the printing system should be reset, in order to guaranty a clean installation. Use Apple icon in the top left corner of your screen to select System Preferences. Open the Printers & Scanners window. Hold the CTRL key down and user the select button on you mouse to click anywhere in the left side of the printer window. Then select Reset Printing System on the menu.

the two drivers are the printer and it's fax.

You can remove them both. This should happen automatically when you reset the printing system. If it doesn't, you can leave the fax icon there.

Uninstall Printer Software - Use Finder to open the System Preferences > Applications folder and locate the subfolder for your printer. Drag the entire folder into the Trash folder.

It looks like there are separate printer drivers and scanner drivers. Here is the link to download and install the print driver:

Install Printer Software - If you do not see a Run button, use your Finder to locate the downloaded printer file in the Downloads Folder. Use the select button on the mouse to select the heading on the Date column and sort the download files by date, so that the required file is at the top of the list. Select the file to open it, and follow the prompts to install the software.

but when I look for the scan driver, it is not in the list. I still just have the printer and the fax.

That list includes drivers for other printers, so I don't think my installation affected it. I'll bet the list was already there.

I'm getting to the list by going to Preferences... Print & Scan (where it shows one printer and one fax only, since I added them from the list.)

Here are the instructions in the Release Notes from the Scanner download page:

Installs a scan driver that will enable the user to scan in Apple's Image Capture application on Mac OS X running 10.6.8 and later Mac OS. Instructions: 1. Download the file. 2. Double-click on the file to mount as a disk image. 3. Open the disk image. 4. Double-click the installer icon to begin installation.

After the "+" sign, I go to the IP tab, select IPP, and the list loads so I can select that option.

When I open the Image Capture device, I see it has only one file: not device.pkg (which was approximating) but Lexmark_ICADriver.pkg

That file is not a user interface. You may not see a separate scanner icon in Printers & Scanners. You should open the printer software icon on your desktop and go to the scanner section.

Unfortunately, those didn't seem to do anything I can find, like adding a permanent icon, or an app, or adding a driver to the Print & Scan window.
