Hi Norman,
I am Pete, and I'll be happy to assist with your question today.

Open the scanner unit. In the top part that is raised up, just under the word Epson (on the left front side), there should be a small section about an inch long cut out from the rest of the panel. In that cut-out section there is a small projection. This projection is what presses down the lever so that the printer knows the scanner unit is closed. Try putting some tape over this projection to help make it just a little bit longer. That will give it just that little bit of extra push down on the lever and everything should work normally again.

Kindly rate my service 5 stars at the top of your question page if my answer worked so I am rewarded for my time; tips appreciated :)
Otherwise please reply back if you need further assistance.

Thanks for the photos; that doesn't appear to be the correct projection.

Are there any others around the edge of the top half of the printer?
