Customer Question

I am trying to print with just black ink
JA: How long has this been going on?
Customer: Awhile. I tried going to settings but it only shows return to store settings yes or no. I use to be able to just print black ink only
JA: What troubleshooting have you tried?
Customer: Turning machine on and off, going into printer preferences on computer settings, I did not use my printer much but I need it now for my business
JA: What's the exact make and model of your printer, and can you guesstimate how old it is?
Customer: Epson Workforce 520 approximately 5 years old
JA: The printer expert can solve this for you. Anything else you want him to know before I connect you two?
Customer: I don't think so

Hi!What software are you using to print on your computer?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Sorry I did respond but not in the correct place. How do I find out what software it is. Would it tell me somewhere?
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

I'm asking what you are printing from? Are you printing a document in Microsoft Word, or another program?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'm a real estate agent so need to print from internet based sites like
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

Ok, so you are printing from and internet browser. Which one? Internet Explorer? Firefox? Google Chrome?

And your goal is to print in black and white? No color?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Google chrome
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

Ok, so you're on the page you wish to print, hit Ctrl + P on your keyboard. Under Color, change it to black and white, then print. Does this work for you?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No. And I've turned it back to color then to black and white again. Still prints color
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

When you change it to black and white, does the print preview stay in color?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
No, it changes to b&w
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

Hmm..., that's unusual. Which version of Windows are you running?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Windows 8.1
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

A couple more questions and I promise I'll stop:

Is the printer connected wirelessly or with a USB cable?

Can you print in black and white in another browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is wireless. I opened in explorer but it doesn't give me an option for b&w or color
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

When you're in IE, hit Ctrl + P, then click the preferences button to select Color or Black/Grayscale

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It doesn't give me that option, only Orientation and Print On Both Sides
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

You should have more options than that, sounds like you have a basic print driver installed. Click here and download 'Drivers and Utilities Combo Package and run it. It should open more options for your preferences.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Tried to run it twice and got an error message:
Cannot find the printer driver
Install the printer driverHow do I do this. Thanks for your patience
Expert:  Thomas replied 1 year ago.

My apologies, I'm unable to work on this problem any further today. Let me release the question to a new expert.

I'm sorry. I'm another tech; I will help you with this. Was it able to print in Black & White previously?

- Please try the solution below:

  1. Disconnect the USB printer cable, if any, from the computer for now.
  2. Open Control Panel (if needed, press at the same time the two keys Windows and R on the keyboard, then type control then click OK, then the Control Panel window will open.)
  3. Then open Programs / Programs and Features, and there, uninstall the Epson driver / program for now.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Open Control Panel again.
  6. Open Hardware and Sound / Devices and Printers. There, if you still see any Epson item, then right-click on it and delete it for now. Make sure there is not any Epson item showing there for now.
  7. Click on the website below:
  8. Then it will download the file called epson15019....
  9. Once the download is done, then open the file epson15019.... and run / open / install it.
  10. Follow the instructions during the on-screen installation window.
  11. Once installation is finished, see if you can print in black & white (or grayscale) now.

- If needed, please try:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Then open Hardware and Sound / Devices and Printers.
  3. Then there, right-click on the Epson printer, then click on Printing preferences.
  4. Click on the Advanced tab at the top.
  5. Check the box Black/Grayscale.
  6. Click OK at bottom.
  7. Then open something you want to print and check.

Please reply at the box below to continue. Thank you,
