I have a problem with a service error on my Canon iP4000 printer,

and can't print any documents...
I have a problem with a service error on my Canon iP4000 printer, and can't print any documents. I use the printer with a Dell Dimension 2400 PC running Windows XP. I've had no problems with printer with the Canon printer since I bought it in 2005, till it suddenly decided not to work!
I have already tried:
1) Switching the printer off, and back on
2) Unplugging the printer and the computer connection, and leaving it unconnected for 18 hours
3) Running RegCure to check for Windows Registry problems and fixing any problems - this didn't fix the printer problem
4) Uninstalling the printer and then reinstalling it

When I click to print a document, a window appears headed Canon Pixma iP4000 - USB001, stating "Service error 5700.
Cancel printing and turn the printer off and then back on.
If this doesn't clear the error, see the printer manual for more detail
."
The error is showing in the computer screen right?

Yes

Accept ONLY after it works.

 

Click Start > Run > Type services.msc > Hit Enter.

Find "Print Spooler"

Right-click on it and then select "Stop".

 

Go to this path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete everything inside this folder.

 

Click Start > Run > Type services.msc > Hit Enter.

Find "Print Spooler"

Right-click on it and then select "Start".

 

See if this makes any difference, else let me know.

I got to Print Spooler, and right-clicked. Start was 'faded' (ie unselectable), so I selected Restart instead, but this hasn't fixed the problem

To save all the hassle, your printer is experiencing a failed/damaged sensor (paper sensor). No point getting this repaired as the cost for sensor plus repair charge will cost you a new printer.

Thinking you meant had I stopped it before starting it, ie switched off the printer before hitting Start, I selected Restart. But I have now tried going to Printer Spooler and selecting Stop, and then Start, but still the problem persists

You are not experiencing a software issue. The paper sensor in your printer is damaged.
