Customer Question

I have a raypak 266 and this is the problem. I start the unit up and get to CFH or IGN on the fron panel and sometime I get IGN if I get that all is well. It heats to a temp then shuts off. The pool cools down and the front panel says CFH but does not always start the heating process. I have to turn the unit off then on again sometime several times before it will heat. At that point it may heat for several days turning itself on and off. then the pool cools down I I repeat the process above. Now it is in a state that goes to CFH ot IGN and it will not start. any ideas?

cfh means it has a call for heat.
so you are being asked to heat but it is not making it.
is the combustion fan running?
do you ignition attempt or ever smell gas out of the vent?
use reply
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I did not know it had a combustion fan and do not know if it is running.
Where would that be located?
I took the cover off after turning it off, just to look at the mechanism at the bottom of the unit where the pilot light is.
I reached in and found the pilot area to be very warm.
I then turned the unit back on and when it called for heat the pilot light lite up so gas is getting into the unit.
For that anyway. I do not smell gas coming out of the vent on top. I have smelled gas from time to time but if
the pilot is lit it should have lit correct?

excellent pics.
Now..are you comfortable turning unit off...and cleaning the pilot and flame rod in the pilot with steel wool?
We need to eliminate the flame sense lost possibilities.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Sure but I am not sure how to take it out. A few screws or what? I don't want to take more apart is necessary.
Expert:  Billy replied 2 years ago.
you will not need to remove it.
As long as you can reach it just leave in place and buff with steel wool.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Ok get back to you when done
Expert:  Billy replied 2 years ago.
just respond when ready
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I have cleaned the thing the best I can.
What I do not understand is that the pilot is lite.
The pilot stays lite as long a CFH is present on the front panel.
If you look down inside the pilot mechanism is red hot. It just keeps burning.
It used to make a big whoosh sound when it lite the burners.
that part is not happening.
Expert:  Billy replied 2 years ago.
Thank you.
That tells me the ignition control is either bad or not grounded well.
The most common issue is a dirty flame sensor rod...but we cleaned that.
Now we are looking at either wire connections or the control itself.
Look at the ends of the wires..especially ones that screw into cabinet as grounds...make sure clean and tight...if the wiring passes inspection then you have a bad ignition control.
