I have to change out the body control module on my 2005

I have to change out the body control module on my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix. I can purchase a new one from O'Reilly's cheaper than the dealership can get it. My question is, why does it need to be programmed? What exactly gets programmed into it?? I do not have keyless entry with that car and I've read that a new bcm will set to the first key used in the ignition. Couldn't I just plug the new one in and go?

I was just trying to figure out exactly what it is that gets programmed into the bcm. There's not a lot of info online and the info I do find seems to be all over the board. I can't even determine if I replace the part, will it even start up and drive to the dealership to have it programmed for whatever else it needs?One thread I found says it only needs to be programmed for anti theft. Another says for keyless entry. One place I saw that a car wouldn't even start without it being programmed first. I have to figure this out this weekend. Everyone is closed through Monday. :/

It is not plug and play, and there is no way of knowing all the updates and functions without attaching it to a factory scan tool. This is why the dealer one is a better option, then only they are involved in this transaction and the responsible party if something goes wrong too.

As I said, there's no list to view, it's all done through the factory scan tool OR alike. Any quality shop that does flashes can also do this, BUT, they will also want to install a quality part.
