Customer Question
Pontiac 400 w/HEI ......

Pontiac 400 w/HEI .... timing light will flash once .... new module, cap, rotor, coil , pickup coil .... 13.0 volts to dist

Mechanic's Assistant: Just to clarify, can you tell me which light it is? And does it blink first, then stay on steady?

Timing light ... to verify spark

Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model/year of your Pontiac?

Not sure , customer brought us a motor to dyno

Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your Pontiac?

Maybe 75 ... aren't all HEI's the same ?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far?

This is a motor on a dyno .... i'm not an ametuer ....i've been dynoing for 40 years ... this one stumps me ... i've replaced eevery part in the dist .... someone said pontiacs and Olds may have reverse polarity ? ....

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

That's it

Hello, is there much play in the shaft? This could be causing the reluctor not to work properly with the pick up coil.

080 verticle .... the usual
Pontiac Mechanic: kwiggins29059, ASE Certified Technician replied 5 months ago

Thanks, ***** ***** units were the same from 74-80 and used the 4 pin module for non computer controlled. You might want to double check that. OTherwise I have a helpful link HERE for testing. I was going to say possible ground issue in car but with it doing the same on your tester it's going to be something deeper. It looks like you've replaced all the parts and with the normal play in the shaft it's got to be something small that's getting overlooked.

My goal is to provide 5 star service. Rating/accepting does not cost extra and ensures I'm credited for my time and knowledge. It also does not close your question if you have a follow up concerning this. Thank you for using Just Answer!

But maybe you have a chevy pickup coil in a pontiac distributor. From looking straight down on the pickup coil which side is the white wire on?

They are swapped on the pontiac. The white wire is on the right and you have to flip it to connect it.

I'm having a hard time picturing it. Something has to be hooked up funny. I'll opt out to see if someone else has any ideas. If not, then you can request a refund. Sometimes these can be real head scratchers when you aren't there to look at it.
