Second opinion] How can I check the left front door latch actuator on my 2008 Pontiac G6 fd sedan before I re- install it?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your G6 yourself? What have you tried so far?

Fixing it myself. Car has sat for 2yrs so I put a new battery in it. Think the latch worked before that. I removed it during that time when battery was dead so I'm not really sure actuator is bad.

Mechanic's Assistant: Did you test the battery with a voltmeter? And have you ever changed one before?

Battery is new as I said. Car runs good but can't close door because I have actuator out. Want to know if there is a way to check it before re- installing it. I'm an experienced backyard mechanic.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

I've plugged the electric connection in but still have the window and lock door panel off.

The problem is with the latch itself. The locking system works ok. Latch won't close on striker so door doesn't stay closed.

Hello there, I am Cam.

I am Licensed technician at a GM dealership with more than 16 years experience.
Like you, I am a user of this website and as such, any billing questions should be sent to customer service.

I ask that you please provide details and communicate with me so we can make your experience here worth 5 stars! I am around most days but not every minute of every day. If you reply while I am offline, I will respond when I am next online.

The latch does not require electronics to actually work, so testing needs only a screw driver to manually move the latch inside. Use it to rotate the latch and see if the latch engages. From your description, if the latch does not engage, its either gummed up with junk or the latch has failed.

If I may be honest, don't put it back in if you have even the slightest doubt . If the latch fails closed then it becomes an even bigger issue getting it out afterwards.
If this was mine I would not take that chance.
