My Pontiac Grand Prix 1994 just passed extensive smog check

Customer Question

My Pontiac Grand Prix 1994 just passed extensive smog check and leaks check last week. Yesterday I drove 30 miles on a hot day with air conditioning running and all was running great. Then took a 30 min break and drove next distance 1/2 mile, parked car, all was normal. Returned after few minutes to the car, started engine and noticed the temperature needle is on hot max, turned off air conditioning, turned on hot air instead, no hot air was blowing. Drove back 1/2 mile, turned off engine, didn't see any smoke or anything unusual except the temp needle on max. Checked the next day on a cold car, the needle was still on highest max. Checked oil level and coolant level, both are fine. Expecting the thermostat failure and not sure if this is the only suspected reason for failure. The car has 172k miles and is driven gently and maintained well. I would appreciate your advise.
