I have a 1981 Pontiac Bonn. 5.7ltr. diesel with only 57k and all of a sudden it started to lose engine power and began to smoke as i would try to excelerate to keep it going. Could this be the vaccum pump before the injector pump that is malfunctioning. what do you think

2 things

1. it could be a bad injector leaking fuel into a cylinder causing lower pressure and the smoking

2. could be the injector pump itself. I did lots of work on these back in the day and the injector pumps were a real problem.

no, it would not be the vacuum pump. it merely supplies vacuum for the accessories to run in the car.
