It could be coming from oil getting on the exhaust manifold and coming in through the vents. Does it look like the valve covers are wet along the bottom part where it meets the head?

No, that has been replaced about 6 months ago. Had leak in compressor, drivers side air was blowing hot due to only .5 lb. in system. No smell before at all. Replaced Comp. and o-rings etc. 48 degree air. Then about 30 min. driving, started smelling a oil type smell quite strong through vents, did not smell like engine oil. Thought evap. however checked that and not leaks.

Yeah, i would suspect compresor oil too....evap leaks are real hard to find. You will know in awhile if it runs out of charge.
I'll see if someone else can add anything. If so you will get an email.
good luck bud.

Hi Lonnie,
It's hard for us to tell where a smell is coming from when we cant even smell it...i'm sure you can understand. The only thing that can come through the vents is air from the outside, or the evaporator. We can continue to wait for someone to chime in or i can close your question.
